  • Has anyone used ammonia as an insect repellent?

I recently talked to someone who said they spray ammonia (50/50 mix with water) around doors, windows, on decks, around the bottom of walls and on fences. They said they have no trouble with mosquitos, ants, blackflies, moths, spiders and even dogs. Has anyone had any experience with this?Has anyone used ammonia as an insect repellent?
When I was a kid, we would put ammonia in our squirt guns to repel vicious dogs. There was no leash law then and there was many instances of kids getting attacked by dog packs. The ammonia did work.

To repel mosquitoes, plant geraniums. They just don't like them.

Ants won't cross a chalk line.

Ive never heard of ammonia being used for those other things. These days, I only use it for cleaning.

Long term effects of using mosquito repellent?

I am writing an essay and don't say do it myself or i'm not doing your homework for you because all i want is some guidance of what it could do exactly. =] Pleaseeee help.Long term effects of using mosquito repellent?
DEET is the preferred mosquito repellent, but frankly it does have some problems.... at least for a photographer in the wild.

The stuff erodes the plastic on cameras!!!!!

And I'm guessing if you put it directly on your skin, it will in the long term have at least some ill effects on one's health.

We have been in Africa many times and did other things.... put it on a rag, and put the rag on the hat. Put it on a shirt, and wore two shirts. Wore gloves. And most bugs hate the smell of Avon's Skin So Soft......

I hasten to add that mosquitoes in Africa are huge, and as well carry malaria, so one has a choice of being slathered in some sort of stuff, or risk malaria, even if you take Larium, an anti-malaria drug for tourists.

There are now devices that emit a frequency that drive them off. Have not used that yet.

But the bottom line for any insecticide or repellent, is that you and that insect rather work the same way... with cells and neurological chemicals. If it harms them, sooner or later it will harm you too. Same with most herbicides. Plants and animals are all made of cells. We are all made of DNA, and though it may take much longer to bother you, the insect lives a few days, the plant maybe several decades, .... you, hopefully will live at least 80 years.... far longer to be exposed to all sorts of chemicals, insect repellents, air pollution, chemicals deliberately put in your food to retard spoilage... this list is endless.Long term effects of using mosquito repellent?
it means more dead mosquitoes which is sad if you are a bat, dragonfly, frog, fish,or an other animal that needs mosquitos to live.. dont forget about that...

An all-natural or organic mosquito repellent?

Does anybody know of one that works? An all-natural or organic mosquito repellent?
Bugmace insect and mosquito repellent is the best out there and smells perfect and was refered to me by my neighbor who swore by it. I tried burts, shu-fly and another(which I cant remember thename) and none of them came close to the bugmace. We stopped DEET like 5 years ago and have been experimenting with different brands off and on and the bugmace keeps EVERYTHING away for the entire day. It contains catnip oil and neem and just as an added boost I also have citro candles out back along with about 20 catnip plants which never need maintenance at all :).

ps: burts did ';something'; but the shufly was a complete waste and had an odor that would knock out an elephant.

Good luck!An all-natural or organic mosquito repellent?
Mix 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water placed on your deck or balcony....citronella also helps...as well as planting Citronella plants [commonly called mosquito bush]! Also dabs of lavender oil on your wrists %26amp; elbows help deter! Tropical traditions online have a natural lotion that repels bugs as well as is an excellent UV protection, we use every time we travel to Costa Rica...
A Citronella Plant, a patch of lavender in the yard .

You can also use them to rub on your skin.
    A Citronella Plant works great!!!
Rubbing whale semen over parts of the skin helps alot.

Is it possible that an insect repellent can be used as a cologne?

would it be harmful to our skin?Is it possible that an insect repellent can be used as a cologne?
Hi there, don't do that , insecticides do get in to your body through your skin , and although they will not kill you the long term affects could,Is it possible that an insect repellent can be used as a cologne?
Well you can use as it a cologne if you really want to smell like that. Obviously it wont be harmful to the skin because it is designed to be put on the skin. Although if you did put in the same place everyday it may start to irratate so if you do want to use i would change the place you spray it every couple of days.

    Kate x x x
i am sure that it might be use as a cologne but have you smelled most of them they smell like **** and why would you want to do that?
Why would you? It smells disgusting. It may damage your skin if you use it too much, and it's definitely not friendly to your nose.
It would not be harmful to the skin only because it is made to put on our skin. But I don't think that you should use it as cologne because it's not a cologne! Sure, it'll help keep the bugs away, but people know what bugspray smells like, and if they find out that you use it everyday as cologne, people are going to start talking. Funny question:) Good luck..
Well if it's an insect repellent it can't be harmful to your skin because you have to put it onto your skin to repell the insects. In short you can use it as colonge but it might not smell very nice!

  • Spider Repellent that works for wolfs spiders and is safe for dogs?

there are always wolf spiders in my house and i hate them so much but my dad doesn't like to kill them cause they eat bugs. And i'm gonna be gone for like 2 weeks and don't want to come home to bedroom full of spiders (they in my room most cause its the darkest) i need something i can spay my door so they won't come in at all and safe for my dogs.Spider Repellent that works for wolfs spiders and is safe for dogs?
Do you have a HY VEE store in your area? If so go get Hedge/Ostage balls. I put them in the window and one by my bedroom door.

We had wolf spiders and those white tiny ones. Uggg.

OstageHedge balls will rot. so put foil under them. Takes 8 weeks to rot.

    But works very well.

Also i spray my screens with windex. Flying insect do not like it. So no spider food. You have to respray window sreens after a rain.

My dogs do not like the smell of the ostage ball. they do not try to eat it or anthing. I put 6 in my 2 story house. 4 outside on each corner.

the cost 50 cents each hereSpider Repellent that works for wolfs spiders and is safe for dogs?
I wouldn't worry about the spiders. they are an outdoor hunter

and only occasionally wander into a home. should one make

use of your room while gone, they are territorial, and likely

there would be no more than one.

I had on that lived behind my computer for well over a year,

    and was never a problem.

There are no known effective repellents for spiders.

lemon scented furniture polish will work, but its effects are

    marginal, and only temporary.

What is the best mosquitoes repellent system in the US?

    Hi there

I have a garden and mosquitoes still break in the house.

I have never been faced with this problem as I was living in appartments before and now I am eaten alive

I used to have plug in repellents in Europe but I cannot find any here.

What are the best solutions for outdoor and indoor? I live in New York.

HELP!!!!!!!!What is the best mosquitoes repellent system in the US?
first of all make sure to keep your surrounding clean. You can use nets in your doors and windows use odomos it is a good medicene to keep away mosquitoes. What is the best mosquitoes repellent system in the US?
Some hardware and garden stores have sprays you attach to your house and spray all over that will kill mosquitos, but the best thing is to make sure theres no sitting water, because thats where they reproduce.

For indoors, find a body spray that has DEET in it. OFF is a good brand, theres lot of others, I just cant remember the names.

Why do Japanese beetles cluster around my gutters and drain pipes at dusk? Is there a repellent spray?

Heat. They are getting cold and they are attracted to the heat produced by the exposed metal of your gutters and drain pipes. If you find or develop a spray to keep them away, you'll make a fortune marketing it. Only way I know of to get rid of them is to kill them. Try a 1/3 of a pouch of chewing tobacco in a pint jar of water allowed to sit for 3-4 days until the water looks like tea. Spray this water on the bugs around your house. The nicotine in the water is a contact poison and should do the trick. Good luck.

What kind of mosquito repellent can in give to my baby who has g6pd?

Can i give him Vick's vapor rub? What kind of mosquito repellent can in give to my baby who has g6pd?
That is not a repellent. I do not know what g6pd is, and I do not know hoe old your baby is and as age is crucial for determining what they can or can't have it is a bit tricky.

I do know that in adults, if you use a good source of vitamin B complex (powder is best in milk and honey) for a few months and continue to use it the mos'ies will not bite any more.

  • What combination of scents would make the best people repellent?

    Self-Esteem and Self-Confidence

How you think about yourself defines your self-esteem. How you see yourself defines your self-esteem. If you are hard on yourself when you make a mistake, if you don't like what you see in the mirror, if you feel like a failure every time your anxiety relapses, chances are you have low self-esteem. You probably don't like yourself all that well. If you don't like yourself, it may be difficult to believe that recovery from your anxiety disorder is possible.

Low self-esteem and anxiety may become a vicious cycle. Perhaps low self-esteem is one cause of your disorder. Perhaps years of battling your disorder have led to low self-esteem. It really doesn't matter which came first because, either way, the two are feeding on each other now. Eliminating one problem won't necessarily eliminate the other, but working on both will bring you further along the road to recovery.

Low self-esteem doesn't change to high self-esteem over night. However, the acts of being good to yourself and compassionate towards yourself will help immensely. These are acts which you may practice every day by being conscious of how you ';speak'; to yourself. If you have low self-esteem, there's a good chance that you are much harder on yourself than you are on other people.

Would you get angry with someone else for having an anxiety relapse? Then why get angry with yourself? Think of the words you use to comfort your friends when they relapse and give yourself the same treatment. This is a technique you may try whenever you are having critical thoughts towards yourself. You might not believe those comforting words at first, but time and practice will make a difference.

The main problem with changing low self-esteem is recognition of the problem in the first place. You might not notice that you are being critical of yourself. You might not see the connection between your self-criticism and your anxiety. Take some time to notice how you talk to yourself. You might carry a small notebook with you to write down some of these thoughts. In the same notebook, write kind, comforting words you may say to yourself when you start to beat yourself up.

I have been suffering from Self-Esteem and Anxiety Disorders since I was a child. You better consult with your doctor,it will get worse with the years because next step will be ';Depression'; and there is not cure [yet] for mental depression.

Depression is like a cancer, slowly will eat you up.DEPRESSION is the leading cause of disability worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. It costs more in treatment and lost productivity than anything but heart disease. We need a network of depression centers, much like the cancer centers.

Please consult with your doctor ASP,before is too lateWhat combination of scents would make the best people repellent?
    Try these things:

    1. Fill your bath tub with perfume and soak in it for a while when you come out, don't dry off let it air dry.

    2. Don't bath for a month and roll in a full dumpster.

These will clear a room about as fast as someone offering free gasoline outside. What combination of scents would make the best people repellent?
I'm not certain why you would want a people-repellent, but I've found that bad body-odor (especially when masked by WAY too much dime-store perfume) and fishy-type smells are the ones most of my friends and I comment on the most. Eww.

What type of insect repellent is best for black people? i dont usually use sunblock or sun screen?

i've heard that avon's skin so soft is really good and it doesnt have deet so that's what i'm looking at, i just want to know which will be the best for me and my 1 year old daughter. i dont like aerosol or sprays and would prefer lotion but they all have sunblock or sun screen in them., thank you! What type of insect repellent is best for black people? i dont usually use sunblock or sun screen?
I've never tried Skin so Soft but have heard lots of positive reports over the years regarding it's bug-deterrent ability. However, simply because you don't use sunscreen/block doesn't mean you cannot or should not. Unless you are allergic to something in it, if there's a product you want to try or you know will work then don't worry about the sunblock ingredient(s). At best they'll help protect your skin, at worst there'll be no effect at all. What type of insect repellent is best for black people? i dont usually use sunblock or sun screen?
You should use the skin so soft by avon.
Avon skin so soft is great, and so what if it has sunblock... regardless of the color of your skin you can still feel long term damaging effects from the sun. I'm with you on the lotion, spray is dangerous for your daughter's eyes. My son almost lost his sight when he was 3 due to a spray insect repellant incident. Better to be safe than sorry!
They have insect repellant sticks....or the spray that's not in the aerosol can...Avon is a good product...but don't get repellant mixed with sunblock...it sucks!
theres an insect repelent its called OFF smells pretty nice it doesnt have any weird colours haha that will make you look as you had a bleach shower aaaaaaaaand its pretty cheap the same brand has stuff for babies so maybe one normal for ya and one baby off lotion for the little girl,ps they have those in cream, lotion, spray and many other ways hehehe i like it,ohhhh and almost forgot hehe it doesnt make skin sticky or sweaty like most of them do
I hear you can make it your own homemade repellent with some flowers.
same as for white people - stupid question
I've never been sunburned and I love standing in the sun. mabey some black people such as myself have a high tolerance to the sun.

And for witch sunblock to use........ i have no idea?
The Avon skin so soft is a good choice for any skin type. Another deet free product is Burt's Bees Insect Repelant.

Don't use OFF because it is loaded with the most chemicals.

Should i use Mosquito Repellent Oil on my baby?

i have 7 month old baby. i live in rural area, there is a big comunity of Mosquito. i am very upset due to these Mosquitos, they bit to my baby. Should i use Mosquito Repellent Oil to save my baby?Should i use Mosquito Repellent Oil on my baby?
No, both are bad for babies. (repellant and the mosquitos)

best thing to do is cover baby up. Place baby in light long sleeve shirts and pants, add socks and watch them. If you find a very light skull cap you should give them that too.Should i use Mosquito Repellent Oil on my baby?
I'm sure that this would be ok however, try to spray far awy from his/her skin so it's light on his or her skin. If you have ever worn toenail polish or finger nail polish and you spray that on it you might notice that the chemicals eat away at the paint like acid. I asume the effect is similar with skin
No. You should not. As most repellents may contain harmful chemicals which will do more harm than good for your baby s skin.so instead use a mosquito net.

  • How does shark repellent work?

Does something like this exist? If so, how does it work? How does shark repellent work?
There are a variety on the market, although everything I've seen tends to indicate that they work differently on different species of sharks. (For instance, one early type drove off some species, but attracted others.) Most either irritate one of a shark's senses, causing it to move on, or make the person who activated it appear as something disgusting to the shark. How does shark repellent work?
Depends on whether it is Chemical, Electronic or 12 gauge

Chemical is normally obnoxious smell to sharks,

Electronic can be sound waves or electric shock

12 Gauge - speaks for itself. (Shotgun cartridge - shotshell)
This first type of shark repellent that was developed works by giving off the scent of dead shark, which apparently others sharks don't like the smell off. It's basically some kind of copper compound and was used by the military first.

There are other types of shark repellents. Newer ones use electric pulses to try to drives sharks away.
Yes! I watched the testing of it on Dirty Jobs - Discover Channel. I'm sure if you went to that website you could look it up! :)
No such thing exist. Nothing is gonna stop a hungry shark if it decides to attack. The most important thing is not to look like something a shark usually eats.

Fern? Sharks feed on other sharks, dead, dying, wounded, crippled and new born. It is silly to think sharks are turned off my the smell of their own dead. Most sharks are scavengers as well as predators.

Sealant or Repellent for new bathroom floor?

I just had my bathroom floorboards and tiles replaced for the third time in my apartment. Is there a sealant or repellent that I can apply to the newly tiled floor to stop any damage from the water?Sealant or Repellent for new bathroom floor?
It sounds like you have an improper installation problem. if the tiles are coming loose, then the sub floor is not solid and secure or your sub liner is incorrect, could be the adhesive is wrong or incorrectly applied. a tile floor is idea for wet areas when installed correctly. Temperature plays a big roll also. cold floor and hot moist air changing to warm dry air over and over will tell you if the job was done right the first time. The tiles loosen and crack.Sealant or Repellent for new bathroom floor?
First, where is all the water coming from? Second, the backer board under ceramic tile is supposed to be waterproof pretty much. There is a sealer for tile sold at lowes, but it is mostly for stain repellent. I do not know about the water side of it.

What is the possible side effect may be obtain of continuous using insect repellent on the body skin?

Deet is the short for N,N dimethyl-toluamide belongs to toluene family. Although deet can offer effective protection from mosquito bites for long hours, they are found to be hazardous not only for mosquitoes but also for our own health. As mosquito-borne diseases like West Nile virus and malaria are becoming more and more prevalent, people are out in a search for an efficient solution to avoid mosquito bites. Consequently they may be depending on chemical based insect repellants made with deet. As media to a greater extent is revealing the dangers posed by deet, a gradual change in the approach of people towards natural based insect repellents is also seen at present.

Even though it is approved by EPA to be incorporated in insect repellents, EPA itself suggests that deet should not be used frequently. This toxic chemical can cause neurological damage and can principally affect the neurobehavioral tasks requiring muscle-coordination. Its toxicity can easily affect the children particularly the infants than adults because of their higher surface area to body mass ratio. Usage of deet is strictly banned for children less than 6 months. EPA suggests that only less than 10% of deet concentration can be applied for children below 12 years. Studies show that deet concentration over 30% to be involved with high health risks like confusion, head ache, agitation, seizure, anaphylaxis and coma.

The fact that any substance especially one which is in the liquid form can easily get absorbed by the skin and can finally reach the blood stream points that toxic effects of deet can also easily reach inside the body. It is found that about 56% of deet can get within the skin and 17% of deet gets absorbed by the blood stream. In this context, relying upon natural based insect repelling solutions is far more a better option. Many natural oils like eucalyptus oil, citronella oil etc is known to be greatest natural insect repellents. Their strong smell can easily drive away the mosquitoes from your side and is also absolutely safe for people of all ages. What is the possible side effect may be obtain of continuous using insect repellent on the body skin?
In a nutshell, it can build up in your liver, destroy it and you can die.

What is best homemade, safe street dogs repellent?

Some street dogs are attacking my bike's seat daily. There are other bikes in my parking lot but they attack only my bike. They have already tore seat cover and seat foam thrice. Plz suggest me some home made spray which is safe to use and keep dogs away from my bike. What is best homemade, safe street dogs repellent?
haha thats funny try a bitter tasting repellantWhat is best homemade, safe street dogs repellent?
if you can handle the smell for a few days the best natural long lasting dog repellant that has no bad side effects is animal urine!! go to a hunting supply store and buy something like bear urine its used to attract the other bears while hunting but will definatley make your invades think that your parking lot/bike has been claimed by a much larger and meaner animal and they will steer clear!! its long acting too dogs have a great sense of smell and it cheap about $6.... dont use hot sauce of mace/hairspray you can go to jail for animal cruelty plus its just mean... spring for the 6$ predator pee.
Umm I'd try Noise makers - or a can with coins or nails in it - be sure to cover the open part firmly -- Shake the tin can Loudly if you see them near the bike seat -it won't hurt them at all %26amp; tends to freak all dogs out I've tried it on - plus its cheap !!!

also supposidly areosol hair hair sppray works similarrly to mace -I'be be careful with the two though as you can shoot it in the wrong direction %26amp; mace yourself %26amp; alot of dogs don't really care about it - u can also try spreading tobasco sauce over your seatt cover -Most dogs HATE it !
either cover your bike in hot sauce or have another dog pee on your bike
Try using a bike seat cover, a cheap one you won't care about and let them tear that up, that way it'll end up missing your seat.

Does anyone know if the sonic mouse repellent devices really work at getting rid of mice and keeping them away

they do but not as well as poison.Does anyone know if the sonic mouse repellent devices really work at getting rid of mice and keeping them away
I have tried several over the last 20 years, and mice have left droppings within a few feet of them. I have also caught mice in traps that were set as close as 2 feet from the sonic repellents. So I threw out all of mine in the last couple of years. And since then, I have read an article in a ';scientific'; - or ';reputable '; magazine /newspaper stating that there is no evidence that they work. Now I have had good luck catching them in the old fashioned wooden spring traps.Does anyone know if the sonic mouse repellent devices really work at getting rid of mice and keeping them away
I don't know. I tried one of those once and unplugged it and threw it away after only one day. (I could hear it, and it was annoying!)
No. I saw some mice laughing and rolling on the floor when one of these devices was plugged in in a house. A good solid two-by-four will sober them up and encourage them to consider relocating to friendlier surroundings. I have also invited my friend Tom over to spend several nights and he usually delights in handling the problem. This a guest that you don't have to prepare meals for either. What a guy !!!

Does anyone know of a frog repellent?

A friend of mine has a pond in her yard and the frogs are coming to her bedroom window at night and keeping her awake. Is there anything she could put out by her window to repell the frogs?Does anyone know of a frog repellent?
Salt water is meant to work (not in the pond!!!), but did you know that frogs repel mosquitos.....Does anyone know of a frog repellent?
Tell your fiend to put some herons and flamingos in her pond. They'll control frog population.
    Nope..
    Miss Piggy usually repels Kirmet
The video game Frogger might distract them for a while. But once they master that game, they'll be back in the window rooting through her xbox and PS2 games. Oh, for the love of man - what a nightmare!
Put some mesh over the pond to keep the frogs from coming
Buy some cats and throw em outside. They will eat the frogs. Or any other natural predator for that matter. Its apparent that there aren't many natural predators in that area. If an area has become overpopulated with a certain species sometimes its our role to play God and invoke the wrath of a natural predator. Just make sure you decide on a quite predator like cats or snakes. Becuase say if you choose a lion..well a lion's roar can sometimes be more annoying than a ribbit from a frog.

Or she could just start catching the frogs and making fried frog legs. IT tastes like chicken !!! YUM!

Poisoning the fly population may also have a similar affect. You could poison all the flies in the local area with a deadly virus that passed from one host to another sexual.. that way as the frogs attempt to breed they end up inevitably destroying theirselves.

What is the best mosquito/bug repellent for Trinidad & Tobabgo trip.?

I am leaving next week for 18 days in Trinidad %26amp; Tobago. Anybody know what mosquito repellent is best? Thanks! What is the best mosquito/bug repellent for Trinidad %26amp; Tobabgo trip.?
The woodland (green can) Off works well in Trinidad, but Tobago is a different story. You need to go to the phamacy in Scarbrough and purchase a small bottle of oil repellent. Place 4 drops on your body and your good to go.

Using Off in 'bago is like giving mosquitos Rum to drink. What is the best mosquito/bug repellent for Trinidad %26amp; Tobabgo trip.?
DEET is pretty good and there's also OFF! which comes in an aerosol can. Bull Frog Mosquito Coast (with sunblock SPF 30) is also an excellent choice since the sun can be brutal over here. Enjoy your trip and I hope you enjoy our lovely islands. :-)

Is it safe to use insect repellent in pregnancy?

30 weeks pregnant and I have found so many spiders around the home.

But I am in two minds.

it is generally safe as long as it doesn't contain DEET

edited: sorry, i re-read and saw that you meant a repellent to be used on your home. i would say that is safe, i would just try to avoid being home when the spraying occurs. Is it safe to use insect repellent in pregnancy?
goodness, deadly and venomous...where do you live? I would suggest contacting the people who manufacture the product he is considering using. In Britain we have a telephone number on a lot of products that we can call for further advice or help on the product itself. Since the product is not being used ON you I would say it was ok...its only when you come incontact with something...through the skin or oraly etc...that you are at risk. However I too would have the same reservations as you until I had spoken to the manufacturer and they had confirmed it was safe.

Regarding Insect Repellent - which do you prefer a spray or a cream?

Why?Regarding Insect Repellent - which do you prefer a spray or a cream?
Spray definitely reason being that it seems to me like the creams don't absorb into your skin fully and tend to sit there(like when you've put a big lump of sunscreen on). Where as the sprays rub in well and are light on the skin:).Regarding Insect Repellent - which do you prefer a spray or a cream?

What is the most effective fly repellent plant for an English garden?

    How big a garden?

The Shoo-fly plant. NICANDA PHYSALODES has possibilities even in the English climate. It's an annual which gets up to 5 ft. tall with sky-blue bell flowers an inch wide. Quite a pretty thing. It's usually used around greenhouses and conservatories, rather than as an extensively-placed plant which is supposed to be effective over a wide area. What is the most effective fly repellent plant for an English garden?
lavender and mint, flies dislike the smell of both you can even pick a small bunch and put it on your kitchen windowsill and it stops them coming in the windows as well - they seem to like the smell of marigolds so try not to plant too many of theseWhat is the most effective fly repellent plant for an English garden?
mint...we use cold black tea with chopped mint as an organic fly repelent for our ponies as they have allergies to chemical stuff....it works better as well...so have lots of mint in the garden
Try sprinkling cinnamon around the plants. Bugs are supposed to hate that.

  • I need a certain type of repellent?

Can you tell me where to get garden gnome repellent?? My neighbors yard is over run with them. I don't want those little tyrants coming over into my yard so I was wondering what would keep them away. Any suggestions. Also...she has a flock of pink flamingos that say all year round. How do they live through the winter on mere bird food??I need a certain type of repellent?
They hate silver, it makes them stay back where they belong. They do love to travel as well so if you charter a bus they'll all just jump right on, but beware; they send postcards. Hey you could organize a junket to a silver mine for the little ankle biters, that would fix em! Pink flamingos are a little trickery, pre heat oven to 350 F; add favorite spices and volia! Depending upon weight of course you should have a real nice Sunday dinner in about four hours. With a flock they really shouldn't notice the odd one or two gone, mmmmm flamingo with all the trimmings.I need a certain type of repellent?
I'd suggest a pit bull or rottie. Train it to attack anything under 18'; tall. (You don't have any toddlers, do you?) That should keep the miserable little wretches off your property.

As for the flamingos, I know they derive their coloring from the pink shrimp they eat. She must be feeding them tomatoes or beets. Try wiring their bills shut. That should stop the little sods!
Place a Light Up Santa in your yard it will keep them away.

The flamingos aren't birds they're alien robots sent to spy on us. They leech the necessary nutrients from the ground while pretending to eat the bird food.
A nice baseball bat should do the trick
YOU CAN GET SOME TOUCHDOWN THAT WILL KILL ANYTHING
It could be worse. She could have old toilets with fake flowers in them. Now that's garden chic!
    I'm quite repellent --- am I the type you're looking for ?

What is the most effective mosquito repellent you have used?

Garlic Pills....and Muskol. I wouldnt say that it really does much for the annoyance as they still fly all in your face especially when in the bush...so the absolute best way is with a mosquito jacket and the aforementioned repellents combined. What is the most effective mosquito repellent you have used?

Some insect repellents contain hormone mimicking chemicals which can really affect development of the fetus. It's best to check with your Dr with the name of the specific chemical being used. Only a very small amount needs to get through, since the fetus is so small compared to an adult. Or tell your landlord you need a thorough vacuuming of the house and a sweeping out of all outside areas (under porches, eaves etc.) This can be almost as effective as poison. Finally, diatomaceous earth also works really well, adn is an organic limestone like substance (basically ground up dead diatoms from millions of years ago). Since it kills mechanically by ripping up the insects in question, there is no danger as with pesticides. Works on spiders, slugs, ants, you name it. Available at many garden stores and online. Look here under Pest Control for more specifics.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diatomaceou鈥?/a>Is it safe to use insect repellent in pregnancy?
there are realy onlly afew spiders who have poison to harm people, you have to be really weak or sick to die from a bite.and i don't think you have them in your area. but to say any incect spry be more poisen then the spider
just don't be around when they are spraying, give it time to air out afterwards, maybe plan a shopping day or during work.
no. because what u inhales, may affect to your baby. try to go somewhere so you can't smell the insect repellents at home.

when my dad sprayed, and when i entered the house i felt dizzy and felt that im gonna throw up. so i stayed in my sister's house until the smell fades away.
if i were you,i would keep away from chemicals while im pregnant..just to make sure the baby is safe. if ur landlord does spray ur place..ask someone close to you (family or a friend) if you can stay at their place for awhile..until the chemical is gone.

Can anyone tell me a good home remedy for mosquito repellent? My back yard is full of mosquitoes.?

Any volatile plant oils, which can be found in a natural foods store or aromatherapy shop will repel mosquitos without the use of DEET. This include:

    Citronella Oil

    Castor Oil

    Rosemary Oil

    Lemongrass Oil

    Cedar Oil

    Peppermint Oil

    Clove Oil

Remove any buckets, pails or anything else that might hold standing water, the suckers like to reproduce near standing water. Can anyone tell me a good home remedy for mosquito repellent? My back yard is full of mosquitoes.?
Pour bleach in everything that holds water, buy ';citronella plants'; and plant them in the back yard. If you have a pond there are these floaty things that kill them. Yard guard spray will kill them.
The best mosquito repellent I ever found was Avon's Skin so Soft and that's not a home remedy, really. I hope with that many mosquitoes, you have your dog on Heartguard.
Most insects do not like tobacco juice. I think you could make a tea out of chewing tobacco, get the twists and not the bags which have too much sugar in them. Grind them up and put them in several layers of cheese cloth and place then into a bucket or tub filled with warm water. Strain it in other cheese cloth until there are no solid particles. Add a teaspoon of liquid detergent to it and then spray it on the grass, any plants, etc. That will stop aphids from your rose bush, any type of bug that eats leaves on plants like Rhododendren or Azeala or anything basically. To spray it, put it into a pump up sprayer. I know some people that will put urine intot he mix, it does not hurt anything.

Has anyone used the Thermacell Mosquito repellent indoors?

HELP! I'm highly sensitive to mosquito bites! My bites swell up huge that I have to be in bed all day long. I need to use some sort of mosquito repellent indoors. Does anyone know what I can use indoors? Like a plug in kind that the Europeans have? How's the thermacell mosquito repellent indoors?Has anyone used the Thermacell Mosquito repellent indoors?
If mosquitoes are such a problem for you then I would be taking mosquito control in your house and backyard seriously.

    1. Indoors 鈥?use mosquito repellents such as Thermacell, coils, screens and indoor mosquito traps.

    2. Outdoors - remove sources of water for breading is probably the most effective thing you can do in your immediate area. You could also look at introducing a mosquito trap.

Here is a good article on controlling mosquitoes in and around your home and another one on mosquito bites although it seems you are a pro in this area already :)

Spiders! Is there a home made repellent out there?

I live in the uk, my house is over run with spiders. I have to kill them at the moment cos they're massive and frighten me to death. They're also territorial, i.e., run towards you rather than away! They're making a mess when I squash them I'd rather have a repellant to keep them out the house, prevention rather than death! I'd like to know if there's a repellant I can make.Spiders! Is there a home made repellent out there?
Spiders don't like the smell of Horse Chestnut and Clove oil, so mix some of this together with water and spray it round the doors and windows so they don't come in. Some spiders are so big they make me feel ill! But apparently they are no bigger this year than any other, its just you forget when you don't see them for a few months. You could get one of those tubes that sucks spiders up and then you can put them out in the garden without killing them. This horse chestnut spray definitely works though.Spiders! fly spray!!!! honestly it really works.. either spray on spiders and it kills them or spray round windows, doors ect and it deters them from coming in!!!!
This is the right time of year to ask this! Go out and collect some Conkers! I put them on my window ledges and anywher spiders are getting in and it really works as they dont like the smell!
i find it hard to believe that they actually attack you...it's certainly better to have them in the house eating all the other nasty insects...what constitutes ';over-run';?... the bigger ones will eat the small ones anyhow...u'll never successfully rid urself of any insect anyway; they rule the planet and will still be here when the human race is long gone...u are probably a thousand times bigger than any spider u can get that's native to this country (UK), so they won't be carrying u off to their lair - they can't build a web big enough to snare you and none of them are poisonous enough to harm u...try and get some therapy, i'm told hypnotism's good...
I can certainly sympathize with you. I recently bought an insecticide called Temp at a local farm service store. It kills every bug you can imagine. I have literally watched spiders die. If you spray a barrier about 4 feet wide around your house, they will be dead before they can come into your house. Try it.. it works.
My 3 jack russells take care of them in my house. As soon as they see it they eat it.
spiders live in fear of other bigger spiders.

i have heard of that if you place them big jokey plastic ones around the house the smaller spiders will stay away as you mentioned they are territorial..

there is also a gadget you can buy that transmits different frequencies that actually paralise the spider thus enabling you to pick it up and remove it humanely, but thes are not to be used around cats apparantely as it has been known to send them into a temporary state of paralysis too.

hope to have been of service..
I understand completely and would also love to know!

I had a big spider lurking in my slippers yesterday!!!

The electronic device seems to work a little bit but not much. I've heard that peppermint oil is suppossed to work but not sure.
The sole of my shoe usually suffices.
Possibly but they keep away even worse bugs
thank god there is someone else out there that feels like me i to think that these spiders are Territorial and no one believes me.

it has also just been reported in our local paper that there are spiders in the village that i live in that have grown exceptionally huge because of the weather we have been having all of the spiders are setting peoples house alarms off there that big.ill be on here all day now reading every ones answers to your question cus i to am petrified
mix kerosine and camphore and spray it

    i think it will help
yes there is your, foot or a book or some thing heavy.
I know its hard if you are scared but try and overcome your fear as spiders are good house pests. They eat the horrid things such as flies.
yes a size 11 shoe that will do the job..........

Ants repellent that is safe for kids and dogs?

I've got ants in my kitchen and living room. They are the very tiny black ones. What would be the best product to use knowing that there are dogs and small children in the house?

Thanks youAnts repellent that is safe for kids and dogs?
Hi you could try either vinegar.Just spray the area where the ants are as they don`t like the fumes.

Also talc is good. You need to make a line near where the ants are because apparently the ants won`t go through the line .Sounds crazy but true ,

Oh another way is mix washing powder with sugar and leave near the ants entrance. The ants will eat this and take it back to the nest and give to the queen which kills it.

Good luck.Ants repellent that is safe for kids and dogs?
Washing powder with sugar? I would like to see that happen. Ants are smarter than that, they shall pickup sugar and leave the powder. So, really you would be leaving food instead of bait. And pets? don't you think they would be happy to lap the sugar?

Is it safe to use insect repellent on 1 year old?

They do make this protection for children..it's a rub on not a spray. I believe Avon sells some too.

avon also sells a Skin so Soft bath oil that you can put on a child. They have a website if you want to go in and look. It's a well known bug repellant. Is it safe to use insect repellent on 1 year old?
Get dry ice and put it little bit away from where he plays. Mosquitos are attracked to carbon dioxodie, you could also spend about 150 bucks for a bug attractor that uses propane. but the dry ice works well.
try avons sss bath oil or do as i do and use the sss bug guard just do not use on hands.... i use that and my daughter is 7 1/2 months
anything that says it has 10% or less of DEET is safe for babies and children.
Get the Avon SSS, it is like babyoil and safe.

It keeps all insects away. Its a bath oil but insects cant stand it.

    It contains carrot oil.
No, absolutely not. Get him a mosquito hat and gloves that is covered in a fine mesh so it protects the face and hands from bites. We use them here all the time during black fly and mosquito season. I live in the north of Ontario in the bush, so I know what it is like.
The best thing to do is to call your pediatrician's office and ask what they would recommend. Most insect repellants aren't for use of children under 2 and pharmacists aren't trained to know all about them. If you can't find what your doctor recommends, find an independently-owned drugstore and they should be able to order it for you and have it in in just a couple of days. In the meantime, try Avon's skin-so-soft bath oil. I always had that used on me when I was a kid.
Long sleeves and long pants I would not put poison on your child
Check carefully, I think there are alternatives to the spray insect repellant that is safe for use on very young children. It would be in the form of a lotion or a wipe.

Make sure you don't apply it to his hands or anywhere around his eyes.

Also, I recently saw a kind of repellant that doesn't contain DEET, which I think is safe for small children.

In addition to repellant, don't have him playing near standing water if you can help it, keep him inside from dusk to dawn, and invest in a bug zapper and come citronella candles.
You can use many repellants, put the repellant on the clothing of your child, not his skin. This will avoid it getting on his hands and him rubbing it in his eyes. I live in Minnesota, and when my daughter was under a year her doctor was scolding me for not protecting her from insects properly. I personally use Off family unscented and I put some of it on my daughter's pants, socks, shoes and on her shirt both back and front. By putting it on the child's clothes you avoid skin irritation, and limiting the possibility of the child getting the stuff in his mouth. There are also sun blocks for babies with insect repellent built in so if its sunny out too you could try one of those, coppertone baby has one I think.

Or a chain and lock on the garbage can. What can I use as a racoon and opposum repellent??
CHicken wire. They and cats or even dogs for that matter don't like the feeling it gives their paws. Just make sure you lay out a good bit at least four feet around the trash can and there are no trees, bushes or fences for them to climb on to avoid the wire. As for not liking the smell of dogs, I have seen opossoms on the chain link surrounding the backyard where I have two dogs.
Get a coupla good coon dogs.
I've been hearing great things recently about mint-scented trash bags (from Repell-X). Boomer Esiason (former NFL QB) always raves about them keeping his trash safe on the morning sports radio show program I listen to. They seem pretty affordable. I haven't used them personally but if I started having problems I would try them for sure. Their website is www.nomorerodents.com.
If you go to a dog groomer and get some Dog Hair and place it around where the critters are getting in you will have the smell of a dog without the mess to clean up....I used to do this in my garden and it worked well
Get a dog, they hate dogs big or small. and the smell of a dog in the yard is enough.

What is best bird repellent? Anything safe without too much odor?

I have birds on my roof that make way to much noise.

Try a plastic owl or hawk (I've seen these at Home Depot).

Is windshield rain repellent appropriate for bathroom mirrors? Is there any reason why it wouldn't be?

Serious suggestion, even if it sounds absurd. Get some of the shaving cream with witch hazel in it, smear it on the mirror, and squeegee it off. It helps keep the mirrors defogged. =0)Is windshield rain repellent appropriate for bathroom mirrors? Is there any reason why it wouldn't be?
Yes, Rain-x will work in bathrooms. In fact, the manufacturer used to advertise that use for it's product. Is windshield rain repellent appropriate for bathroom mirrors? Is there any reason why it wouldn't be?
I don't see why it wouldn't be usable on a bathroom mirror. The only issue you might come accross is heat moisture that may remove the coating. Another good cleaner for mirrors is using windshied washer fluid mixed with water. Works great and is cheaper than store bought glass cleaners.
It should work. I used to use vinegar on the inside of my motorcycle helmet shield when it started to get cold out. Seemed to work well.
Sure rain x works good on mirrors. Car wax works good on fiberglass showers too.
    I wouldn't know why it wouldn't work. Actually it's a good idea I think I'll give it a try .
I don't think it would matter
It works I've head of that, just make sure you get a good quality anit-fog. Some of the cheap stuff leaves a haze

Is there a repellent for gators and crocks?

I am going to Florida for a week and was just wondering if there is something I can do or wear to repell themIs there a repellent for gators and crocks?
just go with somebody that runs slower than you.Is there a repellent for gators and crocks?
Hmm... so if you smear yourself with prep. h, and you don't get attacked, that means it repels alligators? Don't think so. Oh well.

No, there is nothing that will repel them. But here are some safety tips. (Also, keep in mind that your chances of seeing a croc are slim to none, I know people who have spent their entire lives in areas where there are crocs, and have looked for crocs, and still have not seen them.)

Alligators are crepuscular, meaning they are most active at dawn and dusk, limit water activities to daytime hours.

Swim only in designated areas. If you rent a kayak or canoe, do not stop and swim, if you're on the water, you are in alligator habitat. Parks with swimming areas are very good at noticing alligators venturing into areas that they should not be in, and are quick to call in the proper authorities.

Do not think that just because you are in salty water, that there will be no alligators. Gators are found in the ocean from time to time. They have to make their way to fresh water to rinse the salt from their systems, but can function perfectly in salt.

Do not feed alligators. 95% of Florida's alligator attacks are linked to feeding. They lose their natural fear of people and start associating us with food.

Along the same lines, do not throw things at alligators to try to scare them away, making them mad like that may have the opposite effect than the one you want.

If you are fishing and a small alligator follows your lure or bait, it is NOT attacking you, it is attracted by topwater activity and the idea of wounded fish.

If an alligator does approach you, remember, even if it's longer than you are tall, you are still taller than it is, and that is how they judge size.... an alligator will not chase you on land, it's not their nature.... Back up, keeping an eye on the alligator, once you are 15 - 20 feet from the water, THEN run. Don't worry about zigzags or any of that crap, think about it, wouldn't an alligator know about zigzags from chasing fish, otters, and other animals? Run zigzags if someone shoots at you, not if an animal is after you.

Now, the real issue. You have an irrational fear on your hands. In 50 years, alligators have been responsible for the deaths of 25 people in Florida. DOGS kill more people than that EVERY YEAR in Florida alone. But there were three human fatalities in a WEEK last year, you say... Yes, there were, I can't argue that, but if you look at the facts......

Ocala National Forest.... I've rented canoes where that girl did.... you know what? There's a sign where she rented her canoe that said ';No swimming on canoe run.'; What was she doing? She was snorkeling... I guess snorkeling and swimming aren't the same thing.....

Sunrise.... The girl involved in this attack was found to have over the legal limit of alcohol in her system, and also was positive for Xanax. They're not even sure she was conscious when that attack happened.

I forget where the third was, but guess what? Illicit substances were involved in that one as well....

So.... Don't get wasted and go swimming at night, and you'll be fine.

By the way, there has been only ONE human fatality from an American Crocodile. This was back in the 1920's I believe. A pair of surveyors in south Florida came across a croc, one had a camera, the other had a shotgun. The one with the camera said ';Shoot it, and I'll take your picture with it.'; So the one with the shotgun did. Alligators and crocs don't die easily. When he sat down on it's back to have his picture taken, it came back around and killed him. This croc's skin is on display at the Florida Museum of Natural History. That's it... Just one.

Don't worry about alligators, there's more important things to worry about. If they wanted to eat us, there would be no people left in Florida.
lol no sorry. I live in FL and no there is no such thing. Just don't swim in the lakes and ponds and never feed a gator!
yes It's called a shot gum !!! Sorry! don't like gator that much. have a good day

No there is nothing, yes stay clear of murky waters and ponds

N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide, abbreviated DEET, is a slightly yellow oil. It is the most common active ingredient in insect repellents. It is intended to be applied to the skin or to clothing, and is primarily used to repel mosquitoes. In particular, DEET protects against tick bites (preventing several rickettsioses, tick-borne meningoencephalitis and other tick-borne diseases) and mosquito bites (which transmit dengue fever, West Nile virus, Eastern Equine Encephalitis, and malaria).
Cactus Juice is one of several plant based repellents. Note that although many people use it as an insect repellent they can not make the claim unless they register with the epa. The commercial site mentioned has other natural repellents but cactus juice advertises their product is safe for children down to 6 months of age.

Um no. I was stung by a jellyfish once - it felt like a severe burn - three tentacle marks right across my neck - looked like someone had scratched me very badly. I was told it might have been the tentacle's of a dead sea wasp (I was in Oz) Not a good experience. Vinegar was used to make it feel better but it's not a repellent, such a thing doesn't exist I'm afraid.
nope, just keep an eye out and don't go in the water if there are high numbers of jelly fish that day you can find this out by asking a life guard,

if you get stung either piss on is or get hot water and ammonia on it asap it kills the stingers and lowers the discomfort

Can I find a slug/snail repellent/killer that is not poisonous to dogs?

My puppy is really obsessed with Snails and slugs and I am tired of desperately preventing her to eat them. (Also the slugs are eating my strawberries, which is a bit annoying.)

There are slug pellets that are animal friendly look for the pet friendly sign on the packaging, although any slug pellet would still make your dog unwell. You can get these pellets from a diy store or garden centre.

You must be on your guard with your puppy all the time and donot let him eat the slugs anyway. Puppies are like babies and need constant watching.

Contain your puppy in a play area in the garden, fence off the area you do not want him to go into get to the slugs.
Just use salt or rock salt. Try sprinkling it around in border pattern to keep slugs/ snails away from the most frequented area.

I have to do this when it rains. Don't have a big problem with dogs eating them, but hate the mess of stepping on them!
A pie tin with beer in it,the snails go in and die
yeas from good garden centres just look on tub it will tell you if it is pet freindley or not i use it because i have cats
why dont you just put salt on them

BB rifle at 25 feet or more. Definitely non-fatal at that distance, but the sting will get that cat's attention. Is anyone aware of a cat repellent that is safe?
Havahart makes a product called ';Critter Ridder';. It's based on chili pepper that's offensive to cats and dogs yet won't hurt them. Lasts a couple of months.

You can also put rock over the soft dirt spots where the cats like to dig and bury their ';business';.

What is the best equine tick repellent?

i need something that will keep my horses protected out in the pasture, waterproof, and they cant rub off when they roll. What is the best equine tick repellent?
Look for products with permethrin... it works GREAT... For humans, the clothing 'soak' process works REAL well - the below link from the boy scouts of america (I have checked the word doc, and it is safe...) has good directions on how to do it... - will treat clothes good for a couple months - works even after washing!!! and 99.9% tick prevention...

Harmless to humans and can be applied to horses, dogs and cats. One place to get it is agricultural and equarian (sp? - horse) supply stores. If you buy it at 13 or 10 or 2.5%, you just mix it according to the directions for use on human clothes (NOT SKIN) and for horses/pets... it is the best thing for tick prevention... Deet and other repellents don't come close for ticks...

And you can spray the yard/grass with the same product - just follow the directions...

ok so in Australia we have swift it's like a spray that goes on once every month along their dorsal muscle, clout you get it from the vet it's a pink paste and you put it along their dorsal muscle as well this does it for about a month. and for big tick infestation promoxin it's a liquid from the vet and you mix it with water and spray it all over the horse and that lasts about 6 weeks
I live in Puerto Rico, and we have ticks really bad here. I use RepellX. 1 part RepellX and 9 parts water. It is really strong and protects against ticks, flys and mosquitos. I dont have the bottle tonight, however I will check tomorrow. If you are interested. I use bronco as well...but it doesnt do near as good as RepellX
I really like Endure. It's waterproof, rub proof and it lasts a long time, 7-14 days. It's also a fly spray and protects against many other bugs, too.

Does anyone know of a bug repellent for horses that you don't have to spray on?

My horses are afraid of being sprayed so i am looking for a lotion or something to keep the bugs away. Any suggestions?Does anyone know of a bug repellent for horses that you don't have to spray on?
I don't know horses, but my dogs don't like spray either. So I spray into a towel or cloth to reduce the high pitched sound, then I massage my dogs with the cloth... It might be harder with a horse, because you need to do it more times.

But the dogs don't mind the spray... what they don't like is the high pitched sound (that we can't hear), and the feel of the spray which seems like little bugs crawling across their fur or skin. Hope that helps with your horse....Does anyone know of a bug repellent for horses that you don't have to spray on?
Tractor Supply has a roll on repellent that works good.
Theres OFF brand skin wipes. IDK if that works 4 horses lol.
There are many brands in roll-on form or ones that you can pour on a cloth and wipe on the horses.
I use Avon's Skin So Soft Bath Oil for my horse and dogs. It is an oil, so you can rub it on... no spraying necessary. I swear by this stuff!!!
you could try designating a certain brush for spraying the flyspray into then brushing your horse, or you could use a rag/sponge. they also make a few products that are roll on like swat, bug block and war paint. you could also try the spot on treatments they are supposed to work for 2 weeks if you do not bathe your horse. i think one is called freedom. ive tried them but they dont seem to work all that well, at least no better than decent flyspray.

I grew up and spent most of my 67 years on the SE Texas Gulf Coast, right across the border from SW Louisiana.

Until ';Off'; and other ';store-bought'; repellents came about we used CITRONELLA OIL. It is my understanding that it was an extract from the skin of Oranges and Grapefruit, and It was available at all Pharmacies, and most super markets.

It's still available here, but is not as effective as products which contain ';Deet,'; which is what I have used for years now [usually one of two brands - Off, and Deep Woods Off.

If you can get Citronella OIl, and decide to try it as a mosquito repellent, PLEASE USE it VERY CAREFULLY!!!!!

It is a very strong organic oil, and can burn your skin IF applied improperly.

The proper/safe way to use it is to put ONLY ONE DROP in the palm of your hand, then rub both palms together to distribute the oil uniformly over the full surface of BOTH palms.

Then rub it on all exposed skin, being careful not to get it on your eyelids, lips, or the tender mucus tissue of the nostrils. Even a thin amount will burn these areas, and if you get it IN your eyes, immediately flush with large amounts of water and get to a emergency room or doctor as soon as possible.

IF you make the mistake of [for example] applying a drop to just the small surface area of the delicate skin of an arm pit, IT WILL BLISTER that tender skin.

To increase the area of repellent, also apply it in the same manner to your clothes, especially around the neck opening of a shirt, the bottom edges of short sleeves, and for repelling ticks in the woods, apply it heavily around the cuffs, or bottoms of pant legs, and on the shoes or boots.

    Good Luck!

P.S. Oh, and if and WHEN you get bitten by skeeters and other biting insects the itch and pain can be reduced or eliminated by using a ';Q-tip'; dipped in ordinary HOUSEHOLD AMMONIA, and dabbed onto each bite.
I have a mosquito plant in my backyard and it really works well. Picked it up at Lowes for about 5 bucks. After plant starts to grow well, you can take several leaves and crush them in your hand and rub them on yourself. Completey safe and nataurl
Are you breeding mosquitoes or just trying to enjoy your back yard? If there's standing water and you're breeding them, a little oil on the surface of the water kills them. If it's enjoying your yard, there's all sorts of insect killing sprays, foggers, etc in the garden section of your local greenhouse, hardware, or discount store. No such thing as ';natural'; that I know of in this case.....citronella?
There's a plant or bush that naturally repels mosquitoes but I don't know it's name. Sorry. Did I read somewhere that carrying a fabric softener in your pocket will repel insects?
I think geraniums repel mosquitoes. So I hear.
Eat lots of garlic and take B complex vitamins.

    Use a neem product topically.

That is NOT true. If anything, it will actually help enhance your skin's natural scent and attract them even more. They do, however, despise dryer sheets. Is pepper an effective dog repellent? How about chilli powder?

Or is chili powder to much, but effective? I have some chili powder called ';Pico de Gallo.'; Would this work? I got the idea from a previous answer. Is pepper an effective dog repellent? How about chilli powder?
If you are having problems with dogs then you need to speak to their owners not try to harm the dog with chili Powder. If you harm the dog then you'll not only have to deal with the ASPCA but you'll have one angry dog owner on your hands. If the dogs are running around all over the place, call animal control to have the dog picked up. Trust me if you don't know the dog you don't want to piss off an aggressive dog by getting close enough to spray it with chili powder, if you do I hope you can run faster than the dog. How cruel.

Stop asking this question for crying out loud.Is pepper an effective dog repellent? How about chilli powder?
Why do you want to repel dog's?
what the freak? dog repellent? you could buy one of those really high pitched dog whistles that humans cant hear. when the dog hears it... they run away. please don't spray the dog with chili powder or pepper. how cruel and mean. why do you wan the dog away?
y dont u tell us what the problem is. people on here love dogs and actually want them. so dont come on here and ask how u can get rid of them.

EDIT: well then u need to tell ur frickin neighbor. god. even a monkey would know to talk to ur neighbor. just ask them to either tie up their dogs or watch them when they r outside.
How about you tell us the problem and let us help you with that. If we know what the dogs are doing, we'd be able to give you better advice.

    Edit:

Ok, This is different. Dog repellent isn't going to help.

I'd do 2 things. The first is I'd go talk to my neighbor and tell him about the problem. Tell him that you'd really like the dog to stop going in your yard.

If they don't keep the dog in their yard, the next time you pick it up, put ALL of it in a bag and put it on their porch.

If that doesn't work, dump the bag of poop upside down on their porch.

If you see the dog in your yard, call the police.

I'd be polite several times and talk to the neighbor but I'd get tired of this as well - AND I'm a dog owner.

DEET is the best chemical for repellents. The higher the % of DEET, the better. I like muskol. It's Canadian, I think, and it's 100% DEET. Rub a small amount on, and they won't bother that area for hours. What is the best bug repellent for camping deep in the woods?

    With deet:

Sawyer Products' new Sawyer Controlled Release DEET Formula has 20 percent DEET that's physically captured inside protein molecules. As the protein molecules dissolve on your skin, the DEET is released. Sawyer claims 24 hours of protection and a health bonus: Tests have revealed vastly reduced rates of skin absorption, an undesirable characteristic of unencapsulated DEET, since the relatively large protein molecules are not readily absorbed through the skin. Contact: (800) 940-4464; www.sawyerproducts.com/Insect_ Repellent/index.htm.

    Without deet:

Bite Blocker is an oil-based repellent laced with soybean oil (listed with the Environmental Protection Agency as a repellent!), geranium oil, and coconut oil. Used for years overseas, the product was released in the United States in 1997. The Graedons point to a Canadian study of Bite Blocker by the University of Guelph in Ontario that shows 97 percent protection against mosquitoes under field conditions, even 3 1/2 hours after application. Contact: (800) 423-7544; www.consep.com/biteblkr/biteblkr.htm.

Im my opinion it also depends on where you are going. If you are going somewhere that has insect bourne disease.... then go with the big guns and use deet. all studies I have seen say that a concentration of 25% to 35% deet lasts just as long as 100% concentration. Just remember not to get it on any synthetics.

    Happy camping
it's called WATKINS and it's incredible. You have to order it: http://www.watkinsonline.com/. Nothing beats it, especially in lotion form because that lasts the longest. Not kidding either, I've tried everything.
Try some of the Avon Skin So Soft line, it really works and you can get a scent you like. I used it against ticks in Arkansas for two trips during the summer, different years, and thank god it worked. I hate those things. They tried to run away from me and the kids! Not a single bite because every night they showered and we applied more. When they got on our clothes, they just kept trying to get off of us and would not attach but the people who were with us were not so lucky!
    I'm gonna sound crazy here...but I've found WD-40 works the best...bugs hate that ****!
Personally I use Deep Woods Off. Also the week before I go camping I set up my tent in my yard and give every inch a good coat of bug repellent, inside and out, before I pack it up. I also coat my Sleeping bag and any additional tarps I might bring. I find that having my tent space ';Bug Proofed'; helps a lot.
Skin So Soft from Avon.. just find a local rep...
    Deep Woods Off.

    It's the best made.
I used to use Deep Woods Off! but lately I've switched to Sawyer Family Controlled-Release Insect Repellent http://www.rei.com/product/730353 because it stays on the surface of your skin rather than absorbing into your body.
.I use Off- deep woods, I also use the off bug repellent lanterns, i guess they keep bugs away, but Off deep Woods anything works really well, the spray is best, but the towelettes do fine as well
Assuming you don't want deet because it is know to cause cancer!!!! The absolute best stuff out ther is Repel Lemon and Eucalyptus Oil. It is $7 for a 4 oz bottle and it smells good and keeps bugs off as long or longer than anything with Deet. Plus you'll live to see your grandkids. Win Win! Check it out on this link

I use Cutter Advanced. It uses Picaridin which is just as effective as DEET and doesn't have that oily feeling or awful smell that DEET has. It also won't harm synthetic material like DEET does.
    DEET

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DEET

DEET is often sold and used in concentrations up to 100%. Consumer Reports found a direct correlation between DEET concentration and hours of protection against insect bites. 100% DEET was found to offer up to 12 hours of protection while several lower concentration DEET formulations (20%-34%) offered 3-6 hours of protection[1]. Other research has corroborated the effectiveness of DEET.[2]

I'm going to spend a week in Belize, where I'm told you should not go without bug repellent. Can anyone recommend the best bug spray for hanging out at the beach/pool?

I've used Off! Deep Woods in the past, but I can't stand the smell. Any best alternatives? What's the best bug repellent for the beach/pool?
    I've been telling everyone about the new odorless, 20% DEET, lotion-type, ';Sawyer Family Controlled-Release Insect Repellent';

In Backpacker magazine's recent mosquito repellent test it scored very highly. And my family was very happy with it on their recent trip to the South Pacific.

It's available here at REI, http://www.rei.com/product/730353, and even Wal-Mart.

Deep Wood off that is the best since I was in Vietnam good stuff, keep it handy if you are out side and sweating , hope this helps. What is the Best mosquito repellent?
As she said Katnip is great to repel them if you have a place to grow it. Hate to repeat someone else but Skin So Soft from Avon is the best repellent I've come across. Hope that helps.
The skitters are really bad this year and I sympathize with ya. I grow catnip, which is a great repellant. I put lots of it in a spray bottle and fill with baby oil. Try it. Good luck
I know you are going to think I am crazy ... but I recommend you give plain old Listerine mouthwash - the original flavor a try.

If you are determined to put a cream or something else on ... there is a product called ';skin so soft'; by avon I believe that works like magic as well. Mouthwash is cheaper and more effective.

I put Listerine (or any cheap brand) in a spray bottle and spray the yard, deck, clothes, and body ... a mosquito will not come with 20 yards of the area. Best stuff I have ever tried.
