What kinds of substances are in insect repellent?

Also could insect repellent used as insecticide?What kinds of substances are in insect repellent?
Common insect repellents include:





* DEET (N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide)


* Essential oil of the lemon eucalyptus (Corymbia citriodora) and its active ingredient p-menthane-3,8-diol (PMD)


* Icaridin, also known as picaridin, Bayrepel, and KBR 3023


* Nepetalactone, also known as ';catnip oil';


* Citronella oil


* Permethrin


* Neem oil


* Bog Myrtle





Insect repellents are generally designed to a) mask human scent or b) generate a scent which insects find distasteful. They are not insecticides (with the exception of permethrin).What kinds of substances are in insect repellent?
An insect repellent is not an insecticide. Repellents are deterrents: they just keep insects away. Insecticides are poisonous to insects: they kill them.





Citronella oil is a fairly effective natural insect repellent. So is incense. So is wood smoke. Also yellow light, believe it or not. Mosquitoes in particular are averse to yellow-coloured artificial light bulbs.
