Beer (IME) works great for slugs. It doesn't do anything for snails.

Beer is probably better than the poisons. But it is not too good for the dogs
If you can give up a can of beer, put some in a bowl, and leave it overnight, you will be surprised what you find the next morning..this works for slugs.. my daughter and i have a little game you can try. I water the yard.. in the evening, when its almost dark.. wait 30 Min's, then we go out with flashlights and see who can squish the most snails, she loves going out with the flashlight, and i get rid of the snails.. we both win!
THe best thing... nonalcoholic beer!! I worked at a garden and they used non-alcoholic beer all over to kill of snails and slugs. It really works!

Get a 6 pack and a small saucer. Pour some of the beer into the saucer and put it in a spot where you are having the problem. The next day, you should have some slugs floating around in the NA beer, and that should solve your problem... now keeping the dog out of the non-alcoholic beer may be another issue!!
Read up on diatomaceous earth.

Here's one site: http://www.dirtworks.net/Diatomaceous-Ea鈥?/a>

I use food grade, so I can put it in animan feed, as well as on the dogs. You can even feed it to pets and livestock, for internal parasites.

It's murder on ';soft bellied'; pests, like snails and slugs!
lay one inch wide copper strips around the plants, and inside the copper put down diatomaceous earth to dry them up. Trap them elsewhere by putting down tuna cans or shallow dishes full of beer or grape juice. Look under rocks and things in your yard to find the slugs (they ball up together) and pour salt on the whole mess.
Salt it will melt them.
how about some slug predators...hedgehogs, frogs, etc. Check out this site...pretty interesting.

Salt.
i don't know. if i were you, i'd just wait for the little suckers to come out and then attack them with the salt shaker! it's so fun to watch them shrivel up and die.
salt
salt the dogs might lick it but that dont hurt and the snails wont go near it
Salt or vinegar. I cannot quite rember which one it is. It will harm the snails, but I don't know about dogs.
What has become very popular out on the west coast is a product called: ';Sluggo Slug and Snail Bait';

They state on their container; ';Kill Slugs and Snails Without Harming Pets, Wildlife';

From what I understand, it contains Iron Phosphate....which is found naturally in our soils. It's safe to use on vegetables and around ornamental plants and shrubs.

Good luck!
You should be successful in repelling the snails if you use more than one method at the same time, such as coffee grounds %26amp;/or wood ash, along with garlic spray, %26amp;/or a snail repelling mulch, plus a wood %26amp;/or sour milk trap. I hope the following info helps in deciding which different combinations or methods to use. Good luck!

1. Strong coffee! ';A study in the journal Nature found that slugs and snails are killed when sprayed with a caffeine solution, and that spraying plants with this solution may prevent the slimy mollusks from eating them... The researchers found that large doses of caffeine slowed the snails' heart rates and made contractions irregular.'; (1) Another study found that ';After 96 hours, all of the snails treated with a 0.5% or 2% caffeine solution were dead.'; (2)

2.Chile Pepper. Capsaicin, the natural ';heat'; of the chile pepper, makes snails unwilling to cross materials containing the naturally repelling properties of chile pepper.'; (3)

3. Galic spray: Blend well 1garlic bulb %26amp; 1 onion add 1Tbsp cayenne pepper %26amp; 1 quart water. Steep ingredients for 1 hr, then strain %26amp; add 1 Tbsp dish soap and your non-toxic spray is ready to use. (4)

4.Repellent mulches: Wormwood, prostrate rosemary, basil, rue, acacia bark, and oak leaves are disliked by snails and make good repellent mulches. Wormwood is also effective as a spray. (5)

5. Barriers: Dry, dusty or sharp material can be a barrier to snails, such as hydrated lime, wood ash, sharp sand, crushed egg shells, or diatamaceous earth. ';A band 20cms wide and 1 cm high is required. The effectiveness of barriers is reduced when wet so locate them away from watering points. Snail fences may also be made from galvanised metal, window screen wire and similar materials. 30 mesh copper screens can ... prevent climbing, or steel wool can be wound around trestle legs in glass houses.'; (5)

6.Traps: Place board on ground %26amp; scrape off snails when they gather on the underside, %26amp;/or place shallow containers sunk into the ground and filled with beer or other fermenting substances such as sour milk, or even ';a mixture of water and bakers yeast.'; (6) Combining both methods by covering part of the container with a board should prevent your dog from drinking it .

There is also a product called ';Sluggo'; which contains iron phosphate and can be used around pets and wildlife in vegetable gardens up to harvest %26amp; remains effective after rain.(7)
Salt...

hehe... when I was like 5 and 6 I used to pour tons of salt all over snails... it was so gross... they would get really big and start squirming like crazy... then they would dry up and die... pretty cool
