Many plants produce their oils or latex to repel herbivorous insects, to keep the insects from feeding. These can be secreted as oils or be found in the cuticle wax or in the latex that is released from a plant's wound and still act as an antifeedant.

Some botanical have been on the market like pyrethrins from chrysanthemums or nicotine from tobacco plants.

Essential oils like peppermint oil or cinnamon oil used in commercial insecticides because work by disrupting an insect neurotransmitter that is not present in people or other vertebrates. This makes it safer to use around pets or birds that can be very sensitive to accumulating insecticides from eating treated food.
