When is the best time of year to put down slug repellent?

I had so many of them in my garden last year. I spend a lot of time out doors and was constantly stepping on them.

I don't know if it's possible to put something down that stops them from coming into the garden but doesn't kill them?

Any suggestions? Thanks very much! When is the best time of year to put down slug repellent?
use a slug bait that contains IRON PHOSPHATE.... it works so good!!... they eat it, get belly-aches and crawl away and hide to die.. no dead bodies!!!.... the baits are safe around kids, pets and wildlife, changes to fertilizer if not eaten by the slugs , and one application lasts about three weeks if it doesnt' rain constantly..... I have lots of hostas and I start with this stuff as soon as I see ANY hint of them breaking ground... the slugs tend to lay eggs around their fave plants!!.... that gets the first ones outta the way.... then every three weeks or so....

there's two that are popular names... Slug-go and Escar-go.... but there's many others ... just make SURE the IRON PHOSPHATE is the killer ingredient on the label, as the other kinds are toxic.....here's the info on Slug-go...

go ask at a NURSERY for the product.... it's the best stuff I've found yet.....When is the best time of year to put down slug repellent?
We have a pond, and we encourage the birds by feeding them and by pruning shrubs and trees to make good nest sites, and we put up bird boxes. We never have a problem with slugs, but we have a lot of very fat, well-fed frogs and garden birds!

Get the balance of wildlife right, and the problem solves itself. If you want to grow lettuces or anything that is really a slug magnet, you may need extra vigilance, but for most plants, including hostas, birds and frogs will deal with most of them.
Add to everyone else's answers............diatomaceous earth, which can be bought at most garden centers. Totally organic. It is like a rough powder and you circle it in narrow bands around the base of plants or around the circumference of a small garden, raised beds, etc. Slugs get scratched as they try to crawl through it and then they die. Or.....do as I do.........cut the little devils in half with your pruners as you are walking through the garden. Or.....carry a pail of soapy water with you and pick them up and throw them into the pail. Insta death. It gets very easy when you live in places like the great Northwest where the little buggers get pretty damn big and are beyond plentiful. They are also beneficial, believe it or not. They help break down plantlife which then helps to form a natural compost in our forests, etc. Just not in MY yard..........
well be humane and your garden will suffer, the best way to get rid of slugs is to put small bowls of beer in your garden, they love it. they will drop in and your slug problem should be over
depends on your location. I live in the midwest, and we usually put ours down when it starts to get real hot (June'ish) They tend to come out here when it's real humid.
defo beer guinness seens to be there fav or try any strong smelling beer, you will be suprised at how many there are....scary...
anytime
They will not crawl over broken up egg shells.
put a pie pan on the ground filled with beer. It works and also a great way to get rid of your husbands beer.
End of winter...
Cory's slug and snail bait works!
